Chimpanzee & Gorilla Safaris

Gorilla Safari Tours & Trekking in Africa: An Experience Like No Other

Mountain gorillas are the rarest subspecies of gorilla with a total population of just over 1,000 individuals. There are two known mountain gorilla habitats. One is found in the Virunga mountains that straddle the border between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And the other is located in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. In both cases, mountain gorillas can only be found at elevations of between 8,000 and 13,000 feet.

While all species of gorilla are listed as endangered or critically endangered, recent conservation efforts have enjoyed some success. As such, despite the continuing threat of human development mountain gorilla populations have increased by some 20 percent in the past decade. We wholehearted embrace these conservation efforts and offer a variety of responsible, sustainable Gorilla Safari Tours that enable you to experience these magnificent primates in their natural habitat. Those tours include:

Frequently Asked Questions

It is highly recommended that you undertake gorilla safaris in Africa during the dry seasons. That means between late December and late February, and between mid-June and mid-October. During these times roads are in prime condition and it is much more likely that you will see a gorilla or gorilla groups. That’s because they are not fond of the rain and will often take cover out of sight or simply sit motionless when it’s raining.

There are just over 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild. Nearly all are found in the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest provides outstanding opportunities for gorilla trekking and gorilla safaris. The expert guides from Africa Flash MCTours know exactly where to look to find these elusive creatures and how to approach them in a way that does not disturb them or endanger you. Volcanoes National Park is a bit more distant but well worth the trek because it is a primaeval landscape unlike any you have seen before.

A lot depends on the weather. If you decide to go on your gorilla trek during the rainy season everything will be more arduous and time-consuming. Mountain gorillas live between 8,000 and 13,000 feet up the side of the ancient volcanoes in this part of Africa and there are no paved roads to get there. You will typically need to drive on dirt roads for an hour or more, then disembark and climb for another hour or two before reaching the gorillas.

Gorilla trekking can last anywhere from 2 to 5 days depending on which of our gorilla safaris you choose. Most either visit more than one gorilla habitat or are combined with other activities that give you a well-rounded view of the country or countries involved. Either way, you will spend plenty of time visiting the gorillas and chronicling their ways and no doubt come away from the experience a changed person.

Mountain gorillas are wild animals, and while they are typically calm and well-behaved they can become aggressive if they sense any type of threat. But fear not. Our guides have long years of experience with gorilla tracking and will make sure everyone is safe and secure at all times.
