Every year since before the beginning of recorded history millions of wildebeest and other large African mammals have engaged in a dramatic 800km migration through the heart of the Great Rift Valley. It is one of the most compelling wildlife displays anywhere on the planet and typically begins in May when drought forces the wildebeest (along with zebras and gazelles) north in search of the high green grass of the Masai Mara.
Among the millions of adult animals are up to half a million babies, and for them, the migration is particularly dangerous. The incredible concentration of animals, especially easy-to-kill babies attracts the attention of countless lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, vultures and other predators. The life and death spectacle that occurs at river crossings – where crocodiles lie in wait for the migrating hordes – is the stuff of legend and has been the subject of documentary films and nature photographers for more than a century.
While 2 million or more animals set out on the trek north in May 10% or more will never finish the journey, falling victim instead to the hordes of predators that shadow the herd. Late in the year the wildebeest and other animals return south for the winter where they will stay until the following May when the migration starts again.
Featured Safari – The Great Migration 2023 Safari
Your adventure begins with a 5 – 6 hour drive from east to west across the Great Rift Valley from Nairobi to the Masai Mara. Your Africa Flash guide will stop and provide you ample opportunities to capture as many photos as you wish of the breathtaking landscape along the way. After arriving at the Masai Mara National Reserve you will have a chance to deposit your bags in your lodgings and freshen up before heading out to track down the wildebeest migration.
With that experience fresh in your mind you will be returned to your lodgings around nightfall for dinner, lively conversation and comparing notes as the Milky Way stretches across the sky above you and the sounds of the African night encompass the camp. Over the next several days you will discover that the presence of so many hooved animals means the presence of huge numbers of big cats and other predators, optimising your chances of getting those once-in-a-lifetime photos. On Day 6 you will move from Masai Mara to Serengeti National Park where your Great Migration odyssey will continue.
