June to September
Elephant, Lion, Giraffe, Hippo
At Africa FlashMC Tours, we create extraordinary journeys into Akagera National Park, one of Rwanda’s most remarkable wildlife destinations. Set along the eastern border with Tanzania, this diverse landscape of savannah, wetlands and lakes spans over 1,122 square kilometres (433 square miles).
Akagera is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, buffalo, leopards and the recently reintroduced black rhino and lions. With more than 500 bird species, it’s also a haven for birdwatchers. Whether you’re planning a family holiday or a photographic expedition, our tailor-made safaris are the perfect way to explore this unique park.
The climate here is generally warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F – 86°F) throughout the year. Rain falls mainly from March to May and October to December. Akagera National Park sits at a lower elevation than much of Rwanda, so it tends to be hotter and drier, light clothing and plenty of water are essential.

Akagera National Park lies in eastern Rwanda, along the border with Tanzania. It’s about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Kigali. The park protects Rwanda’s only savannah ecosystem and a network of scenic lakes and wetlands.
The dry season from June to September offers the best game viewing, as animals gather around water sources and the vegetation is less dense. Birding is rewarding year-round, especially near the lakes.
You can self-drive in a 4×4 vehicle or book guided safaris with licensed tour operators. You must check in at the main entrance, fill out an Akagera registration form, and pay park fees before exploring.
Akagera is home to the Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. You’ll also have the opportunity to see giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, antelope species, and over 500 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork.
There are currently around 40 lions in Akagera. They were successfully reintroduced in 2015 after decades of local extinction, and their numbers have been steadily growing thanks to effective conservation management.
Akagera is about 110 km (68 miles) from Kigali. The journey by road takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, making it an easy day trip or weekend safari destination from the capital.
The park has more than 10 lakes, including Lake Ihema, Lake Shakani, and Lake Rwanyakizinga. These water bodies attract large populations of hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife year-round.
Akagera spans approximately 1,122 square kilometres (433 square miles). This diverse area combines savannah plains, swamps, rolling hills, and lakes, making it Rwanda’s largest protected national park.
