## Itinerary

### 1. Mombasa - Masai Mara National Reserve by Plane

This morning, your guide will meet you at your hotel. Depending on which is closer, you will then be transferred to either Diani or Mombasa’s Moi International Airport. From there, we board a scheduled 2-hour flight direct to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Touching down within the reserve, a safari vehicle will be standing by to greet you. As your safari adventure commences, keep a lookout for wildlife to be seen along the way. Kenya’s flagship reserve, the Masai Mara, covers an area of 1,510 sq km (580 sq miles) and rises 1,500-2,170 meters above sea level. At this altitude, the climate is surprisingly mild considering its proximity to the equator. In fact, it can get quite cold at night and in the early morning, so we advise you to pack some warm clothing. Renowned for its prolific wildlife, the reserve forms part of the circuit followed by the Great Wildebeest Migration. With abundant prey species, the reserve is also home to a diverse array of predators. On arrival, you’ll be shown your accommodation, and lunch will be served. After settling in, you’ll head out on an afternoon game drive before returning to camp for dinner and a well-earned rest. Accommodation at your camp or lodge Overnight stay inside Masai Mara Game Reserve Lunch and dinner, not breakfast Drinking water, other drinks are extra

### 2. Full day in Masai Mara National Park

Wildlife is the name of the game for the next two full days. Traditionally, game viewing is best in the late afternoon and early morning. As such, you’ll be off to an early start. After breakfast, we’ll board the custom safari vehicle and set off in search of wildlife. It is useful to note that many of the vehicles looking for wildlife are in radio contact, so should something exceptional be seen in your vicinity, your guide will know about it and take you there if possible. For many, the Big 5 sit at the top of the checklist. So named by olden day hunters, these animals are said to be the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot (in Africa), the group includes lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo. All five species occur in the area, although rhinos are only occasionally seen. At lunchtime, you will stop for lunch and a good stretch before continuing for the afternoon. In theory, the best chance of seeing the big cats in action is after dark. However, cheetahs do most of their hunting during the day to avoid losing their kills to nocturnal predators like lion, hyena and leopard. In the late afternoon, you’ll return to camp in time for dinner. Then, fall asleep to the sounds of the African night. Accommodation at your camp or lodge Overnight stay inside Masai Mara Game Reserve Breakfast, picnic lunch, and dinner Drinking water, other drinks are extra

### 3. Full day in Masai Mara Natonal Reserve

Once again, the day starts with breakfast at dawn before heading out to explore the marvels of the Mara. Your guide is an expert in bushcraft, often with years of experience. They know how to ‘read’ the bush and have an uncanny ability to predict where animals will be. Keen-eyed, they follow descending vultures to last night’s lion kill. Like city folk reading the news, professional guides learn all they need to know by reading the signs of the wild. Should your visit coincide with the migration (between July and October), you will see why it is called the Greatest Show on Earth. Massive herds of over 2 million wildebeest and a similar number of other herbivores criss-cross the reserve in search of grazing. That said, outside of the migration period, these species and others are readily seen throughout the reserve. Giraffes are conspicuous in their height, while warthogs look comical as they take the knee while foraging for roots. Primates, such as baboons and vervet monkeys, add comical value to the day, while the bustling activities of banded mongooses are always fascinating. Whether you’ve seen the Big 5, the migration, or spent moments of tranquillity at a river viewpoint, you’ll return to camp exhilarated. Share stories around the campfire before dinner, before retiring to bed. Accommodation at your camp or lodge Overnight stay inside Masai Mara Game Reserve Breakfast, picnic lunch, and dinner Drinking water, other drinks are extra

### 4. Masai Mara National Reserve - Mombasa by Plane

As the sun rises over the grasslands of the Masai Mara National Reserve, it is time to reflect on all you have experienced. No doubt, you’ll have many fond memories to share with your loved ones back home. Before leaving, you’ll enjoy a delicious breakfast spread. Then, it’s time to leave for the airstrip to catch a flight back to your departure point, either Mombasa International or Diani Airport. Touching down, it is time for the Africa FlashMc Tours team to wish you a fond farewell. As you wait to board your next flight, ponder these words from author Francesca Marciano, “Why is it you can never hope to describe the emotion Africa creates? You are lifted. Out of whatever pit, unbound from whatever tie, released from whatever fear. You are lifted, and you see it all from above.” With this in mind, start planning your return. We would love to host you again! No accommodation, this is the final day Breakfast and lunch, no dinner Drinking water, other drinks are extra

## FAQ’s

### How long is the flight from Mombasa to the Masai Mara?

Flights from Mombasa to the Masai Mara typically take between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on the route and whether the aircraft makes scheduled stops at other safari airstrips. Flying allows you to travel directly from the coast to the reserve while maximizing your time in the Mara.

### Which airport do I fly from in Mombasa?

Flights depart from Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Transfers between your hotel or beach resort and the airport are typically included as part of the safari package.

### Can I fly from Diani instead of Mombasa?

Yes. In many cases, flights can be arranged from Ukunda Airstrip in Diani Beach rather than from Mombasa. This can be a more convenient option for travelers staying in Diani, as it eliminates the need for a road transfer to Moi International Airport. Your safari expert can advise on available flight schedules and any applicable supplements.

### Is 4 days enough for a Masai Mara safari?

Yes. A 4-day safari is considered an excellent amount of time to experience the Masai Mara. With three nights in the reserve, you’ll enjoy multiple game drives, explore different areas of the ecosystem, and have ample opportunities to observe wildlife without feeling rushed. Many travelers find that four days strikes the ideal balance between safari time and overall vacation length.

### When is the best time of year for this safari?

The Masai Mara has outstanding wildlife viewing throughout the year. July to October is the most popular period due to the Great Wildebeest Migration, while January to March is known for excellent predator sightings, pleasant weather, and fewer visitors.

### What is the luggage allowance on the small plane?

Most safari flights have a luggage allowance of 15kg (33lbs) per person, including hand luggage. Soft-sided bags are required, as they fit more easily into the aircraft’s luggage compartment than hard-shell suitcases.

### Can children join this safari?

Yes. This safari is suitable for families, and many camps welcome children of all ages. The combination of comfortable accommodation, exciting wildlife encounters, and convenient flights makes it a popular choice for families visiting Kenya.

### What is the difference between Economy, Mid-Range and Luxury options?

Economy camps provide simple but comfortable accommodation with essential amenities, good hospitality, and access to excellent wildlife viewing at a more affordable price point. Mid-range camps and lodges have upgraded facilities, larger rooms or tents, enhanced dining experiences, and additional comfort while maintaining strong value for money. Luxury properties deliver a more exclusive safari experience with premium locations, spacious suites or tents, elevated service levels, high-quality dining, and additional amenities such as private decks, spa facilities, or exceptional wildlife-viewing locations.

### Can I see the Big Five and the Great Migration on this safari?

You have an excellent chance of seeing the Big Five during a 4-day Masai Mara safari, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard are seen regularly, while rhino sightings are possible in specific areas of the ecosystem. If you travel between July and October, you may also witness part of the Great Wildebeest Migration, including large herds of wildebeest and zebra moving through the Mara.

### How much is the hot air balloon safari?

A hot air balloon safari typically costs between USD 450 and USD 550 per person, depending on the operator and season. The experience includes a sunrise flight over the Masai Mara, breathtaking aerial views of wildlife and landscapes, and is usually followed by a champagne bush breakfast. It is one of the most popular optional activities in the Mara and is particularly favored by honeymooners, photographers, and first-time safari travelers.
