Rapids Camp is privileged to have hosted the first-ever African Olympic kayaking qualifier in January 2008, with over 16 African countries participating in a breathtaking event. Rapids Camp has the best site in Kenya for rafting and kayaking junkies to capture live photos, as it is the only camp with a massive waterfall. We suggest that after rafting on the Sagana, you take advantage of the camp activities such as camping, bungee jumping, river trekking and rock climbing, or just relax on the beautifully manicured lawns. An a la carte lunch is served at Rapids Camp, but for a bush breakfast, lunch or dinner, you need to place an order. Rapids Camp white water rafting itinerary and Safari tours in Kenya Our programs begin at either 9 am or 2 pm. The rafting trip is about 12 km long, and under our qualified guides, we negotiate different river routes requiring different levels of technical ability. The various routes have different grades, ranging from flat water to grade 5 rapids, depending on the season. April-May and November-December have the highest levels of water because of the monsoon rains. Kayaking and Rafting on the Mathioya River, Kenya The Mathioya River rises in the Aberdare forest, which is one of the five most important water towers in Kenya. It is unlike the Sagana and can be likened only to the Colorado in the USA. When full, the Mathioya produces the most technically difficult rapids in Kenya. Only those who are very skilled or have wide experience kayakking in other countries can conquer the Mathioya River. The Mathioya has two tributaries, the Mathiya gatacioma and Mathioya ma iyego. On our Mathioya kayaking and river rafting tours, we can take short trips to Fort Hall and Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga, which means the mythical Garden of Eden in the local dialect."

## Itinerary

### 1. Nairobi – Sagana, Tana River

You will be picked up from Nairobi and driven via the Thika Superhighway to Sagana, a small town situated on the edge of a small plain at the southern foot of Mt. Kenya. The Sagana River is the main tributary of the Tana River, the longest river in Kenya, with its unique and beautiful scenery. On arrival, you will be welcomed with a cup of coffee/tea and biscuits, followed by a short safety briefing. You will proceed to the departure point, where you will be issued with life jackets, helmets and paddles. The tour begins with a short stretch of Class II and III rapids so that you can learn the necessary paddling skills. These are followed by a drift down calmer water that lasts about an hour, giving you time to take in the scenery and identify many of the more than 110 bird species that are found in the area. The final four-mile stretch begins with Class III rapids. Paddling skills and commands are reviewed before heading into the first of three Class IV and Class V rapids, and finally, smaller rapids. Having completed the trip, you will be given a delicious 3-course barbecue lunch at Savage Camp. After lunch, you can enjoy zip-lining (at an extra cost) or return to Nairobi, arriving in the evening. You will be dropped off at a place convenient to you.
