Mountain gorillas are the rarest subspecies of gorilla with a total population of just over 1,000 individuals.
There are two known mountain gorilla habitats. One is found in the Virunga mountains that straddle the border between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. And the other is located in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.
In both cases, mountain gorillas can only be found at elevations of between 8,000 and 13,000 feet.
While all species of gorilla are listed as endangered or critically endangered, recent conservation efforts have enjoyed some success.
As such, despite the continuing threat of human development mountain gorilla populations have increased by some 20 percent in the past decade.
