Bushpig, Potto, Pangolin
Kenya is known for the diversity of its native wildlife, and rightfully so. But there is more to this jewel of the African continent than elephants and lions. The Kakamega National Reserve is a remnant from a lost age. The last remaining piece of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once covered all of Western Kenya.
Within its borders, you will find treasures to awaken the mind and fill the heart. You will see birds that do not exist anywhere else, mysterious primates, and rare forest-dwelling mammals while walking deep forest trails that seem carved from another century. Kakamega Safari Tours are an important part of our offerings at FlashMC Tours. Once you partake of this stunning nature preserve you’ll know why.
Safaris in Kakamega: The Kenya Birding and Wildlife Safari
The Kakamega Forest National Reserve is a natural wonder of the world, harbouring more than 1,000 species of birds and scores of smaller but equally impressive mammals, some seen rarely anywhere else. But if you really want to optimize your exposure to the wildlife of Western Kenya you must partake of our Kenya Birding and Wildlife Safari.
As far as Western Kenya and Kakamega Safari Tours go this is among the best. For 9 days you will be escorted in safety and comfort from one natural wonder to another and take in the entire panoply of East African wildlife including giraffe, lion, elephant, zebra, rhino, gazelle, cheetah and more. That’s in addition to the astonishing diversity you will see in the Kakamega National Reserve, where you will spend 2 nights and 1 full day.
Kakamega Forest has a tropical, high-rainfall climate. Due to its proximity to the equator, temperatures are constant throughout the year. Average afternoon temperatures are around 28°C/82°F, but nighttime is cool at around 11°C/52°F. It rains throughout the year, but it peaks in April and May.

Things to do in Kakamega
Go Birding: If you are a fan of birding there are few places that equal the Kakamega National Reserve for the sheer variety of obscure bird species. You’ll see African broadbill, black-billed weaver, chestnut wattle-eye, grey parrot, Kakamega greenbul, pink-footed puffback, red-headed malimbe, white-chinned prinia, white-spotted flufftail and hundreds more species.
Take a Hike: One of the most popular activities during Safaris in Kakamega is hiking. The reserve sports a variety of trails that range in length from 1 to 7 km and in difficulty from easy to moderate. Several trails pass evocative waterfalls, snake through the deepest part of the ancient forest and occasionally open up to provide spectacular vistas.
Go Camping: If you are not the type who goes for organized Kakamega Tours you will be happy to hear that parts of the forest have been set aside specifically for camping. Mischief is discouraged by the presence of local guards so you can rest assured knowing you’re safe as you enjoy the abundant thrills of staying overnight in the deep African jungle.
Polish Your Photographic Skills: Kakamega Safari Tours reveal a gold mine for photography buffs. The interior of the forest has remained essentially unchanged for thousands of years and is a place of stunning natural beauty and diversity. Because of the dense nature of the tree cover, you won’t see lions or giraffe or wildebeest. What you will find are several types of monkeys, bushpigs, genet, tiny antelope-like creatures called dik-diks and much more.
Visit The Crying Stone: Located just a short drive outside the forest is one of the most compelling sites in Western Kenya. The Crying Stone is a natural rock formation that resembles (a somewhat modern take on) the human figure. The stone is more than 120 feet high with a second stone perched somewhat precariously atop it, providing the “head” for the figure. What makes the Crying Stone such a rich source of myth and legend is that, from time to time, water drips from under the “head” down the front of the “body” of the stone, giving the impression it’s crying.
