The Best Time to Visit Kakamega National Park

Kakamega’s network of trails (winding through cathedral-like forests, fern valleys, and riverine glades) is at its finest during the long dry season (June – September). Footpaths are stable, stream crossings are manageable, and visibility into the understory is excellent. The short dry season (December – February) brings similarly ideal hiking conditions, with warm days perfect for longer treks.

Kakamega is one of Kenya’s most important birding destinations, home to species found nowhere else in the country. While birding is exceptional year-round, the peak season runs from November to April when migratory species join resident turacos, hornbills, and forest weavers. The short rains ignite insect activity, drawing even more birds into the open.

Blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys are among the forest’s most charismatic residents. They are easiest to spot in the dry seasons (June – September and December – February), when forest canopy gaps widen and troop movements are more visible. After light rains, primates become particularly active, foraging near trail edges and streams.

Photographers will find Kakamega’s long dry season (June – September) ideal for clean light filtering through the canopy and for capturing the forest’s dramatic textures. The greener months (October – April) offer a magical palette of mist, saturated foliage, butterflies, and atmospheric forest mood, perfect for rainforest specialists.
