Jambo! Welcome to Kenya. Our 3-day Solio Ranch Fly In Safari offers visitors the chance to witness and be part of a Kenyan wildlife conservation success story. Having been heavily persecuted by poachers and with much of their historical home range lost to human expansion, both black and white rhinos in Kenya faced an uncertain future. Concern for their plight led to the creation of the world’s first rhino sanctuary: Solio Ranch. Since then, this privately-owned reserve has expanded its conservation mandate, offering guests a luxurious experience that helps sustain their core mission: the return of rhinos and other threatened species to their rightful place on the plains of East Africa.
Accompanied by an Africa FlashMc Tours guide, you’ll savour the surroundings. Flying to and from Solio, your time enjoying the comforts and wildlife of this special place will be maximised. In addition to game drives in customised safari vehicles, you’ll also have the opportunity to join horseback, cycling and walking safaris.
(45 minutes Flight)
In the morning, your Africa Flash McTours guide will meet you at your hotel or the airport. They will then escort you to your aircraft, which touches down at Nanyuki Airport about 40 minutes later. From there, you will board a vehicle for a 45-minute road transfer to Solio Ranch. On arrival, you will be shown to your luxury accommodation and enjoy a mouth-watering lunch.
Privately owned, Solio Ranch covers an area of 70 square kilometres (27 sq. mi.) in central Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau. Previously a sole-use cattle ranch, the owners decided to convert it into a game sanctuary, specifically to address the decline of black and white rhinos in Kenya due to poaching and other manmade threats. Today, Solio boasts a healthy population of black rhinos and several white rhinos. Along with lions, elephants, buffalo and the occasional leopard, this small reserve is home to the Big 5. General game species, like giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, are common. Boasting several distinct habitats, over 350 species have been recorded, including crowned eagles, Egyptian vultures, pallid harriers and sooty falcons.
After a short siesta, you will depart on your first game drive. As a private conservancy, night drives are allowed, meaning you may get to see some of the area’s nocturnal wildlife. Returning to camp, dinner is served before bed.
We have multiple amount of accommodations, which fits any type of budget
The Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is situated in the central Kenyan highlands and offers a beautiful view of Mt Kenya. Surrounded by three wildlife reserves the lodge provides an ideal base for safari game drives.
Solio Lodge is located on a private wildlife sanctuary, tucked in the valley between the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, directly north of Nairobi.
Guests have the option of trying other activities, such as horseback, walking or cycling safaris. Should you be interested in doing these or other activities offered, please speak to your guide or a member of staff.
Setting off in the early morning, the entire day will be devoted to exploring Solio Ranch and seeing which of its many species of wildlife you can see. In the course of the morning drive, you will pause for a delicious bush breakfast at a scenic location.
Thanks to extensive conservation efforts, Solio Ranch is home to both white and black rhinos. White rhinos are about double the size of black rhinos and easily distinguished by the square shape of their jaws. By contrast, the smaller black rhino has a hook-lipped jaw. Typically, white rhinos prefer open country, while black rhinos prefer dense thickets. Unusually, the two species are often seen together on the ranch.
At lunchtime, you’ll return to the lodge for lunch and leisure time, before heading out on an afternoon game drive.
Lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas are the apex predators in the reserve. With the exception of cheetahs, these predators are most active at night and their distinctive calls are often heard.
Returning to camp, dinner around the campfire and a comfortable bed.
Waking up on your final morning at Solio Ranch, savour the sunrise before sitting down to a delicious breakfast, while listening to the dawn’s bird chorus. Then, after checking out, you’ll take one last game drive, perhaps checking a few more of the ranch’s species from your checklist.
Then, it is time to head back to Nanyuki Airport via road transfer. At Nanyuki, we’ll board a flight back to Nairobi. Once there, it is time to say our goodbyes, wishing you well with your onward travels. Having tasted a small portion of what Kenya has to offer – diverse wildlife, proactive conservation projects, and friendly locals – we hope you’re already planning a return visit. If so, be sure to let us know. We at Africa Flash McTours would love to show you more of our amazing country.
