How Much Does a Uganda Safari Cost?

How Much Does a Uganda Safari Cost?

Uganda may be best known as one of the last remaining places on Earth to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in the wild, but this unspoiled country is full of surprises. Picture mist-shrouded rainforests, savannahs teeming with wildlife, and boat cruises past hippos and crocodiles in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains. With its warm hospitality and off-the-beaten-path appeal, Uganda is one of Africa’s most rewarding, and underrated, safari destinations.

So what does it cost to experience this wild beauty? Uganda cost factors vary based on your chosen activities, the level of comfort you seek, and whether you’re flying between destinations or exploring by road. From gorilla trekking in Bwindi to classic safaris in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls, here’s what to expect when budgeting for a safari in Uganda.

Types of Safaris in Uganda & Their Cost

Fly-in Safaris & Charters

Uganda’s main gateway is Entebbe International Airport (EBB), with fly-in options available to remote regions like Kidepo Valley, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, or Queen Elizabeth National Park. These small aircraft flights offer speed and convenience, especially for travelers short on time or exploring diverse regions.

Self-drives

Self-drive safaris are becoming more common in Uganda, particularly along the well-maintained southwestern circuit linking Lake Mburo, Bwindi, and Queen Elizabeth. Roads can be rough in national parks and rural areas, especially during the rainy season, so a 4×4 is essential. You’ll need to pre-book gorilla or chimpanzee trekking permits in advance

Classic Safaris

Most travelers opt for guided safaris in private or small-group vehicles, with experienced driver-guides navigating both game drives and regional transfers. This option offers insider knowledge, smoother logistics, and a deeper connection to Uganda’s wildlife and landscapes.

Road Transfers

Driving between destinations is a common, and cost-effective, way to explore Uganda. Though distances can be long, road journeys reveal the heart of the country, from banana plantations and crater lakes to lively villages. Expect a mix of tarmac and dirt roads, depending on your route.

Uganda Accommodation Costs Per Night

Uganda’s lodges and camps reflect its untamed beauty, riverside eco-retreats, forest hideaways nestled in gorilla country, and classic safari camps overlooking savannah plains. Expect a mix of rustic charm and thoughtful luxury, often in settings so remote they feel otherworldly.

In places like Bwindi, accommodations range from cosy forest chalets to world-class lodges with sweeping jungle views. In Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls, you’ll find everything from family-friendly lodges to romantic bush camps. As always, Uganda cost varies with season, location, and level of exclusivity.

Important note for all Uganda cost: All pricing is indicative and based on per person, per night sharing (double occupancy), during Low and High Seasons. Prices exclude international flights, visas, and optional activities such as gorilla and chimpanzee permits. Park fees, conservation levies, and community contributions are subject to change. High Season generally spans June to September and December to February.

How the Time of Year Can Affect the Cost of a Uganda Safari

Uganda’s equatorial location means it offers year-round travel opportunities, but certain months bring better conditions depending on what you’re planning. June to September and December to February are typically the driest periods, ideal for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and traditional game drives. Trails are drier, visibility is excellent, but trekking permits are in high demand.

The wetter months of March to May and October to November bring fewer crowds and lower rates. The rainforest is particularly atmospheric at this time, with thick jungle mist and dramatic skies. Though rain can make conditions more challenging, wildlife remains active, and availability is more flexible for popular lodges and permits.

Additional Costs To Consider

  • International flights are generally not included in safari package costs.
  • Internal transfers may be included with some accommodations.
  • Charter flights offer quicker access to remote areas like Bwindi or Kidepo.
  • Road transfers are widely used and often more affordable.
  • Vaccinations are not included and should be arranged in advance.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers entering Uganda.
  • Consult your healthcare provider for personalised travel health advice.
  • Gorilla trekking permits cost around $700 per person per trek.
  • Chimpanzee trekking permits range from $150–$250 depending on the location.
  • Tipping is optional but appreciated, bring small denominations in USD.
  • Travel and personal insurance are not included and should be arranged independently.
  • Uganda’s official currency is the Ugandan Shilling, though US dollars are accepted in most tourist areas.
  • Post-2006 USD notes are recommended; older notes may not be accepted.
