Best Time for Your Safari Interest

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

The Uganda gorilla trekking season peaks during the long and short dry periods (June – September and December – February). Trails are less slippery, visibility is excellent, and gorillas are easier to track in drier weather. Trekking permits are limited, so early booking is essential, especially for popular areas like Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Best Time for Big Five Game Viewing

Uganda’s best wildlife viewing aligns with the Uganda safari season, the dry months of June – September and December – February. Animals congregate around water sources, offering superb sightings in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley National Parks. Scenic boat safaris on the Nile or Kazinga Channel are at their most rewarding during these months.

Best Time for Birdwatching

Uganda weather by month shifts dramatically between dry and wet seasons, creating exceptional conditions for birders. The wet months (March – May and October – November) are prime for spotting migratory species and vibrant breeding plumage. Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe offers Shoebill sightings, while Kibale and Semuliki teem with forest species. The landscapes are lush, and the air is alive with birdsong.

Best Time for Budget Safaris

Travelers seeking value will find the rainy seasons (March – May and October – November) ideal for discounted rates and fewer crowds. Known as the “Green Season”, this is when Uganda glows with fresh greenery, skies are dramatic, and photography conditions are at their best. Many lodges offer off-season specials, making it a perfect time for an affordable yet rewarding safari.

Plan Your Visit with the Seasons

Uganda experiences a tropical climate with relatively consistent temperatures year-round, averaging between 21 °C and 30 °C (70 °F–86 °F). Two rainy seasons break up the year, affecting travel conditions, especially for gorilla trekking.

Traveling to Uganda – January & February

  • This is one of Uganda’s dry seasons, making it one of the best times for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Trails are less muddy and wildlife viewing is excellent across the national parks.
  • What to pack: Breathable long-sleeved shirts and trousers, sturdy hiking boots, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent.
  • Temp: 21–30 °C (70–86 °F) avg. Rain: Low to moderate (~50–75 mm/month), especially in the south.

January

An ideal time for primate trekking in Bwindi and Kibale. Game viewing in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls is also very good. Expect dry trails and excellent visibility.

February

Conditions remain favourable, especially for trekking and boat safaris. Birding is also excellent, with migratory species still present in wetlands and forests.

Traveling to Uganda – March to May

  • Uganda’s "long rains" begin, making some roads and trekking trails slippery. However, the landscapes are lush and vibrant, and the parks are quieter, offering rewarding experiences for seasoned travelers and birders.
  • What to pack: Waterproof jacket, gaiters, durable footwear, walking stick (for trekking), insect repellent.
  • Temp: 20–28 °C (68–82 °F) avg. Rain: High (~100–200 mm/month), especially in April.

March

A transitional month, early March may still offer decent trekking and wildlife conditions. As the rains build, landscapes transform into a green paradise.

April

One of the wettest months, especially in southern Uganda. Trekking is more difficult due to mud, but the scenery is dramatic and beautiful.

May

Rain persists but begins to ease toward the end of the month. Fewer visitors make this an attractive time for those seeking solitude and photographic opportunities.

Traveling to Uganda – June to October

  • This is the best time to visit Uganda. Conditions are dry, ideal for trekking gorillas and chimps, and for classic game viewing in the savannah parks. Permits for gorilla trekking sell out fast during this peak season.
  • What to pack: Warm layers for early mornings, light clothing for the day, sunscreen, trekking gear.
  • Temp: 18–28 °C (64–82 °F) avg. Rain: Low (~25–75 mm/month), particularly dry in July and August.

June

The dry season begins. Excellent conditions for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga, and prime game viewing in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls.

July - August

Dry, sunny, and cool. One of the best months for all-around travel, with excellent visibility for trekking and safaris. Book gorilla permits well in advance.

September

Still dry and excellent for trekking and wildlife sightings. Slight chance of showers late in the month, but travel is generally smooth.

October

Short rains may begin later in the month, especially in southern Uganda, but early October can still offer fantastic conditions and fewer tourists.

Traveling to Uganda – November & December

  • Uganda’s “short rains” refresh the scenery, creating lush landscapes. Though some trekking trails may be slippery, conditions are manageable and the parks are quieter, making for a more intimate experience.
  • What to pack: Light rain jacket, hiking gear, insect repellent, warm layer for highland regions.
  • Temp: 21–30 °C (70–86 °F) avg. Rain: Moderate (~75–120 mm/month), with occasional downpours.

November

Short rains set in, particularly in the south. Some lodges offer lower rates, and fewer visitors mean more flexible trekking slots. A great month for birdwatchers.

December

Rain begins to ease in many areas, and wildlife viewing remains strong. This is also a popular time for holiday travel, book early for gorilla permits and festive season accommodation.
