Just a short distance from Meru National Park’s Murera Gate, Ikweta Safari Camp is a refreshing alternative to larger safari lodges. Owner-operated and intentionally intimate, the camp is set within a grove of indigenous trees where birdsong replaces background noise and the pace of life naturally slows. With just a handful of spacious safari tents, it feels less like a hotel and more like a thoughtfully designed base from which to explore one of Kenya’s most overlooked wilderness areas. The camp was deliberately built outside the national park to minimise its environmental footprint while still providing immediate access to Meru’s extraordinary wildlife.

The design is understated and practical, allowing the surrounding landscape to take centre stage. Canvas tents sit beneath traditional makuti roofs, each with generous living space, private verandas, and en-suite bathrooms finished with natural stone. Throughout the camp, indigenous gardens attract an abundance of birdlife, while open communal spaces encourage you to unwind between game drives, whether beside the swimming pool or over long, freshly prepared meals served individually rather than as buffets.

Meru National Park remains one of Kenya’s least-visited safari destinations, and that sense of space is part of its appeal. Rivers thread through doum palm forests, open grasslands give way to dense woodland, and wildlife moves freely across landscapes that rarely feel crowded. From elephants, lions, and both black and white rhinos to exceptional birdlife and the legacy of Elsa the lioness, Meru gifts travellers who value discovery over familiarity.
