Family Holidays Across the Serengeti and Beyond

Tanzania Family Safaris

A Tanzania family safari is for families who are ready to experience wildlife on an extraordinary scale. It has landscapes and wildlife spectacles that few destinations can rival – from the vast Serengeti, which is fourteen times larger than Kenya’s Masai Mara, to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most densely populated ecosystems on Earth. Add the drama of the Great Migration river crossings, and Tanzania becomes the safari destination for families looking to experience Africa at its most spectacular.
Flash McTours curates family itineraries that make exploring Tanzania both exciting and practical. Our fly-in safaris replace seven- to nine-hour road transfers with scheduled flights of less than 90 minutes, giving families more time where it matters most, on safari. Every itinerary includes private game drives, carefully selected family-friendly camps with spacious suites or interconnected accommodations, and the option to end your adventure with a relaxing beach escape in Zanzibar. By removing the longest road journeys, our fly-in safaris make Tanzania far more comfortable for families traveling with children.
In this guide, you’ll discover which parks are best suited to different ages, how long to spend on safari, why flying between parks transforms the experience, and what to expect from your itinerary. Whether you’re planning your first safari or returning to Africa for another unforgettable adventure, we’ll help you build the perfect family journey.

Why Choose Tanzania for a Family Safari?

A Tanzania family safari is best suited to families with children aged eight and over, largely because the distances between Tanzania’s iconic parks are considerable. While the drive from Arusha to the Serengeti can take seven to nine hours, a carefully planned fly-in itinerary lets your family arrive in the Serengeti on the very first day, opening the door to one of the most diverse collections of landscapes and wildlife anywhere in East Africa.

Wildlife on a Scale Children Remember

The Serengeti delivers a sense of scale that's difficult to appreciate until you're there. During a single morning game drive, it's entirely possible to encounter lions resting beneath acacia trees, elephants crossing the plains, cheetahs scanning the horizon, hippos wallowing in a river, and even a leopard draped across a branch, all before breakfast. Between July and October, the Great Migration brings more than 1.5 million wildebeest north toward the Mara River, where dramatic river crossings become one of the most incredible wildlife experiences for families with older children.

Age-Appropriate Access Across the Northern Circuit

Every park has something different, which is why choosing the right itinerary matters. The Serengeti has no minimum age for game drives, although Flash McTours generally recommends eight years old as the ideal starting age to fully enjoy the experience. Tarangire National Park is equally welcoming for younger travelers, with huge elephant herds and beautiful baobab landscapes, while access to the Ngorongoro Crater floor is restricted to visitors aged 15 and over. Families with younger children can still enjoy breathtaking views from the crater rim and wildlife sightings throughout the wider conservation area.

Fly-In Safaris That Work for Families

For many families, the greatest challenge of a Tanzanian safari isn't the wildlife, it's the distance between parks. Spending seven to nine hours on the road each way between Arusha and the Serengeti can quickly become exhausting, especially for younger travelers. Flying reduces those transfers to just 45 to 90 minutes, meaning your family can arrive in the Serengeti on the afternoon of day one instead of losing valuable safari time to long drives. The result is a more relaxed pace, more game drives, and a far more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Combine the Safari with a Zanzibar Family Holiday

A Tanzania beach and safari vacation is the best of both worlds. After several exhilarating days exploring the Serengeti, a scheduled 90-minute flight takes you to Zanzibar, where calm beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, and family-friendly resorts provide the perfect place to unwind. A Zanzibar family holiday has shallow bays around Nungwi and Kendwa, excellent snorkeling straight from the beach at low tide, and fascinating cultural experiences in historic Stone Town. Four to five nights in Zanzibar is the ideal way to round off a family safari, and Flash McTours arranges every flight, transfer, and hotel as part of one hassle-free itinerary.

Serengeti Family Safaris

3 - 5 Days

Best For

  • Families with children aged 8 and over
  • Great Migration river crossings (July to October)
  • Calving season wildlife (January to February)
  • Year-round Big Five sightings
  • Families wanting the ultimate Tanzania safari experience

A Serengeti family safari is the highlight of almost every family adventure in Tanzania and the reason many travelers choose the country over any other safari destination in Africa. Covering 14,750 square kilometers, the Serengeti is home to thriving populations of lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, hippos, wild dogs, and countless other species throughout the year, while the annual Great Migration transforms the landscape into one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles. From July through October, families can witness dramatic river crossings in the northern Serengeti near Kogatende, while January and February bring calving season to the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, where newborn wildebeest attract an abundance of predators. Scheduled flights from Arusha reach the Serengeti's network of airstrips in just 45 to 90 minutes, with every transfer arranged as part of your Flash McTours itinerary.

Ngorongoro for Families

1 - 2 Days (as part of a Northern Circuit itinerary)

Best For

  • Families with children aged 15 and over (crater floor)
  • Black rhino sightings
  • Families combining with the Serengeti
  • One of Africa's most spectacular volcanic landscapes

A Ngorongoro family safari introduces families to one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife environments. Formed when an ancient volcano collapsed thousands of years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater spans approximately 260 square kilometers and supports around 25,000 large animals within its natural bowl. It's one of Tanzania's best places to spot the endangered black rhino, alongside lions, elephants, hippos, hyenas, and spectacular flocks of flamingos gathered around the crater lake. Families should be aware that the Tanzania National Parks Authority currently sets a minimum age of 15 years for access to the crater floor. For younger children, the crater rim has breathtaking panoramic views, while the surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area provides excellent wildlife viewing before continuing toward the Serengeti. Flash McTours carefully plans every itinerary around these age requirements to make sure that every member of the family enjoys the experience. Ngorongoro works best as a one- or two-night stop on a longer Northern Circuit itinerary rather than as a standalone destination. Located approximately two to three hours from Arusha by road, it combines easily with both Tarangire National Park and the Serengeti.

Tarangire for Families

1 - 2 Days (as part of a Northern Circuit itinerary)

Best For

  • Families wanting close elephant encounters
  • A quieter alternative to the Serengeti
  • Dry season wildlife (June–October)
  • Combining with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro

A Tarangire family safari is perfect for families looking for exceptional wildlife in a quieter, less-visited setting. Running alongside the Tarangire River, the park is renowned for its enormous elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, creating landscapes unlike anywhere else in Tanzania. With fewer vehicles than the Serengeti, Tarangire is a more relaxed safari experience that many families appreciate. Wildlife viewing is excellent throughout the year, particularly during the dry season from June to October when animals gather around the Tarangire River. Alongside elephants, families regularly encounter lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, ostriches, and an impressive variety of birdlife. The park is also one of the few places in Tanzania where species such as fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and oryx can be seen. Tarangire lies approximately 120 kilometers from Arusha, around two to three hours by road, or can be accessed via Kuro Airstrip on scheduled domestic flights. It makes an excellent first or final stop on a Northern Circuit itinerary before flying onward to the Serengeti.

Tanzania Family Safari Packages by Duration

Choosing the right Tanzania family safari depends on two key factors: the age of the youngest traveler and whether you’d like to include a Zanzibar beach extension. While a safari-only itinerary generally needs at least five to six days to justify the journey, adding Zanzibar creates the perfect nine- to twelve-day family adventure.

Family on a Guided Walking Safari in Tanzania, Serengeti

5- to 7-Days

A five- to seven-day itinerary is ideal for families wanting a focused safari experience. Five nights in the Serengeti provide four full days of game drives, bringing excellent opportunities to see predators, elephants, giraffes, and, during July through October, the Great Migration river crossings. A seven-day itinerary also allows time to include Tarangire or Ngorongoro before returning to Arusha.

Buffalo Sighting in a Tanzania Family Safari

8- to 10-Days

Eight to ten days is the most popular length for family holidays in Tanzania, letting families combine a safari with a relaxing beach escape. A typical itinerary includes four nights in the Serengeti before flying directly to Zanzibar for another four nights at the Indian Ocean. Families who prefer to focus entirely on wildlife can instead spend eight to ten days exploring the Northern Circuit, combining the Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro with fly-in connections between destinations.

11-Days and Longer

Longer itineraries let families experience everything Tanzania has to offer without rushing. Spend several nights in the Serengeti before continuing to Tarangire and Ngorongoro, finishing with four or five nights on Zanzibar's beautiful coastline. This pace works particularly well for families with children aged ten and over, while younger travelers often benefit from staying longer in fewer locations rather than moving every couple of days.
