Flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Masai Mara typically take between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on the location of your camp and whether the flight makes any scheduled stops at other airstrips within the Mara ecosystem.
The airstrip used will depend on your selected accommodation. Common arrival points include Ol Kiombo, Keekorok, Musiara, Mara Serena, and Kichwa Tembo airstrips. Your safari guide or camp representative will meet you on arrival and transfer you directly to your lodge or camp.
Yes. A 3-day fly-in safari is one of the most popular ways to experience the Masai Mara. With two nights in the reserve and a full day dedicated to game viewing, you’ll have ample time to explore different areas of the ecosystem and enjoy multiple game drives while avoiding lengthy road transfers.
The Masai Mara has excellent wildlife viewing throughout the year. July to October is particularly popular due to the Great Wildebeest Migration, while January to March is often favored for predator sightings, warm weather, and fewer visitors. Even outside these periods, the Mara remains one of Africa’s most incredible year-round safari destinations.
Most scheduled safari flights have a luggage allowance of 15kg (33lbs) per person, including hand luggage. Soft-sided duffel bags are required, as hard-shell suitcases are generally not suitable for small aircraft.
Yes. The safari is suitable for families, and many camps welcome children. The short flight from Nairobi and the abundance of wildlife make the Masai Mara an exciting destination for younger travelers. Some camps may have minimum age requirements, so it’s worth checking with your safari expert before booking.
While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, a 3-day safari gives you an excellent chance of encountering the Big Five. The Masai Mara is particularly well known for its lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard sightings, while rhino can occasionally be seen in specific areas of the reserve and surrounding conservancies.
A hot air balloon safari typically costs between USD 450 and USD 550 per person, depending on the operator and season. For many visitors, it is one of the highlights of a Masai Mara safari. The experience includes a sunrise flight over the plains, spectacular aerial views of wildlife and landscapes, and usually concludes with a champagne bush breakfast. It’s particularly popular with honeymooners, photographers, and first-time safari travelers.
Mid-range camps have comfortable rooms or tents, excellent hospitality, and strong wildlife experiences at a more accessible price point. Luxury properties typically provide larger rooms, upgraded facilities, enhanced dining experiences, and more personalized service. Deluxe camps represent the highest level of safari accommodation, combining exceptional locations, premium guiding, spacious suites, fine dining, and highly exclusive safari experiences.
