Akagera’s wildlife is consistently visible year-round, especially near lakes and plains. The long dry season (June – September) is ideal for spotting lions, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo as they cluster near water. The short dry season (December – February) also offers strong predator sightings under bright skies.

Lake Ihema is the star of Akagera, and June to February provides exceptional boat-based wildlife viewing. Hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds are abundant, and the calmer dry-season waters create prime photography conditions.

With over 500 species, Akagera is spectacular for birding. The best period is October to April, when migratory and breeding activity peak, especially across papyrus wetlands and lakeshore forests.

Photographers will love June to September for clear views and golden-hued grasslands. From October to April, vibrant greens and dramatic skies offer painterly contrasts, especially at sunrise and during evening boat safaris.
Akagera National Park has a warm, tropical savanna climate, moderated by altitude and its many water bodies. Daytime temperatures generally range from 73 – 90 °F (23 – 32 °F).
Akagera remains warm throughout the year, ranging from 72 – 90 °F (22 – 32 °C). Dry seasons deliver the highest wildlife visibility, while the rainy seasons enrich vegetation, wetland activity, and photographic opportunities.
