Chimp families in Gishwati are seen year-round, but June – September offers the most comfortable hiking and the best visibility in the forest. The short dry season (December – February) is also excellent, with lively primate behavior and rewarding photography.
Guided forest walks are enjoyable in every season, but June – February provides the safest and driest trail conditions. During the wet months, the rainforest becomes beautifully lush, though waterproof boots become essential.
October – April is prime for birdwatching, when forest species are joined by migrants and breeding birds display vivid colors and calls throughout the canopy.
June – September delivers clarity and easy access to forest viewpoints. During the rainy seasons, mist, raindrops, and deep greens bring dramatic mood and texture to rainforest imagery.
Gishwati-Mukura has a cool, humid tropical montane climate. Daytime temperatures generally range from 55 – 77 °F (13 – 25 °C).
