June to March, best for wildlife viewing
July to March
Flamingos, White Rhino, Zebra.
Lake Nakuru National Park is not the largest nature park in East Africa but it is one of the best known and most beloved. Our Lake Nakuru National Park Safari Tours are some of our most popular and it’s easy to see why. Lake Nakuru is a shallow alkaline lake known for attracting incredible flocks of pink flamingos that feast on the lake’s abundance and present once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities.
Many people know Lake Nakuru from the 1985 Best Picture winner “Out of Africa” as many of that film’s most indelible images were captured here. At the same time though, the park is more than a location for the world’s largest flamingo rave. It is also home to, among other animals, more than 2 dozen critically endangered black rhinos.
Things to do in Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is a multifaceted wonder. Some of the most popular things people do when they venture here include:
Explore Lake Nakuru (the lake itself): Lake Nakuru itself often forms the backdrop for the experience of many visitors who never actually venture to its shores. Take a walk down to Flamingo Road and see this incredible natural wonder close up and personal.
Visit Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site: Renowned naturalist Louis Leaky uncovered evidence of prehistoric activity at what is today called “Hyrax Hill” during the early 20th century. When people lived here during the Neolithic period the lake was some 100 meters deeper than it is today.
Marvel at the Flamingos: No one knows for sure when pink flamingos first decided to call Lake Nakuru home, but today there are estimated to be 1 million of them. While their numbers dropped a few years ago when lake levels temporarily rose, the flamingos are now back in full force.
Visit Makalia Waterfall: An often overlooked gem of Nakuru is the Makalia Waterfall located at the southern end of the park. Located amidst a primaeval landscape Makalia Waterfall takes you back to a time when man was an insignificant presence on the world stage.
Lake Nakuru’s climate is mild and temperatures are consistent year-round. Daytime temperatures are pleasant in the mid to upper twenties, although it is much cooler at nights. Warm clothing for early morning game drives is a necessity. The wettest months are April and May. The rest of the year is relatively dry with some rain throughout.
