Samburu National Reserve offers reliable big cat sightings throughout the year, particularly lions and leopards that favor the riverine forests and open plains. The long dry season (June – September) is prime time, with low vegetation and wildlife concentrated near water. The short dry season (December – February) is equally rewarding, with warm conditions and frequent daytime predator activity.
The Ewaso Nyiro River is Samburu’s lifeline, drawing elephants, buffalo, crocodiles, and other wildlife year-round. During the dry seasons, animals congregate along the riverbanks, creating exceptional viewing opportunities. Even during wetter months, Samburu’s permanent water ensures dependable sightings.
Birdwatching in Samburu is at its best from November to April, when migratory species arrive and breeding activity peaks. The reserve’s riverine forests attract kingfishers, bee-eaters, hornbills, and fish eagles, while the dry months are excellent for spotting raptors soaring above the plains.
From June to September, Samburu delivers clear skies, strong contrast, and classic arid-land photography. Between November and April, the reserve turns greener, with dramatic cloud formations, softer light, and striking color contrasts between river and desert landscapes.
