Amboseli National Park is a relatively small but vitally important National Park and game preserve in southern Kenya that is part of a much larger ancient ecosystem that transcends the Kenya/Tanzania border. Despite the park’s relatively compact size, Amboseli Tours are among the most popular in Kenya due to the spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities and equally spectacular vistas, many of which include Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Before we get into our Amboseli Safari Tours let’s take a look at some of the things you can do in this incredible natural preserve.
Wildlife Viewing and Game drives. – This is obviously the #1 reason people flock to Amboseli from all over the world. But it’s not just that the park offers an incredible array of wildlife, it’s the combination of that wildlife presented in one of the world’s most compelling landscapes that makes wildlife viewing here such a treat.
Visit the Local Maasai Villages – The Maasai have lived in this part of Kenya for centuries and are as much a part of the experience as Kilimanjaro. Despite government attempts to get them to ‘modernize’ the Maasai have clung to their traditional ways, and we’re all better off for it.
Bird Watching – Amboseli is a good birding destination and more than 420 species have been recorded here. The swamps are great for water-associated birds such as egrets, herons, pelicans, crowned cranes and flamingoes.
Sundowner at Observation Hill – The ‘sun-downer’ is an essential part of safari life, when elegant cocktails are served while watching the spectacle of the African sunset.
A Balloon Safari in Amboseli – A Balloon Safari is truly the best way to view the Amboseli National Park, Mt. Kilimanjaro, local lodges and camps and surrounding Maasai Manyattas and Bomas.
Conditions in Amboseli NP are hot and dry. Rain typically falls as short, heavy showers. During the day expect average temperatures of around 28°C/82°F and 15°C/59°F at night. Early morning activities, such as game drives, require warm clothing. The ‘long rains’ usually fall from mid-March to mid-May while the ‘short rains’ are from late October to mid-December
