Plan Your Visit with the Seasons

Kenya’s climate shifts throughout the year, there are varied safari and beach experiences. Average daytime temperatures range from 20 °C to 30 °C (68 °F–86 °F), with two distinct rainy seasons and long stretches of dry, sunny weather.

Traveling to Kenya – January & February

  • This is one of the driest and most pleasant times to visit, perfect for safari and beach holidays. Vegetation is sparse, which makes spotting wildlife easier, and the coastal regions are hot and ideal for a tropical escape.
  • What to pack: Lightweight clothing, sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen. A warm layer for cool early mornings.
  • Temp: 20–30 °C (68–86 °F) avg. Dry and sunny. Rain: Low (~20–50 mm/month).

January

Excellent for Big 5 game viewing in parks like Amboseli, Laikipia, and the Masai Mara. The coast is sunny and hot, perfect for beach relaxation in Diani or Watamu.

February

Conditions remain ideal across Kenya, with warm days and great wildlife sightings. It's also one of the best months for birdwatching, as migratory species are still present.

Traveling to Kenya – March to May

  • This is the season of the "long rains." The landscape becomes lush and green, and the air freshens. Although game viewing is more challenging, this is a beautiful time for photography and fewer crowds
  • What to pack: Waterproof jacket, umbrella, sturdy shoes for muddy trails, insect repellent.
  • Temp: 21–27 °C (70–81 °F) avg. Humid and wet, especially in April and May. Rain: Heavy, especially in April (100–200 mm/month).

March

The month starts dry and warm but transitions into the rainy season. Travel is still possible and parks are quieter.

April

The wettest month of the year. Some lodges and camps may close temporarily, and roads can become difficult. Still, dramatic stormy skies and lush landscapes make it a photographer’s dream

May

The rain continues, but the scenery is stunning and the air is clear. Not ideal for beach holidays, but a peaceful time in the parks.

Traveling to Kenya – June to October

  • This is Kenya’s peak safari season. The dry weather draws animals to permanent water sources, and the Great Migration arrives in the Masai Mara around July. It’s also the best time for hiking and mountain climbing.
  • What to pack: Warm layers for chilly mornings, light clothing for daytime, sunscreen, sunhat.
  • Temp: 15–27 °C (59–81 °F) avg. Dry, with crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Rain: Very low (~10–30 mm/month).
The great migration

Late July

The first herds of wildebeest arrive from Tanzania, crossing the Mara River, an iconic moment of the Great Migration.

August

The Masai Mara is at its best. Expect dramatic river crossings, predator activity, and full camps, it’s imperative to book early.

September

Dry and temperate, with excellent wildlife viewing. Many camps remain full until mid-month.

October

The migration begins to return south, but the resident wildlife remains abundant. A great time to avoid crowds but still enjoy classic safari conditions.

Traveling to Kenya – November & December

  • The "short rains" arrive, revitalising the landscape without heavily disrupting travel. Wildlife is still plentiful, and migratory birds return. It’s a quieter and often more affordable time to visit.
  • What to pack: Light clothing, rain jacket or poncho, insect repellent. Good walking shoes.
  • Temp: 22–30 °C (72–86 °F) avg. Warm with scattered showers. Rain: Moderate (~50–100 mm/month), typically short and in the late afternoon.

November

Short bursts of rain refresh the land, but many parks remain open. A great time for photographers and travellers seeking solitude.

December

The landscape is lush, birding is superb, and wildlife sightings remain strong. This is also a popular time for festive season travel, book early.

Historical temperature average

In the Masai Mara, average daytime temperatures hover around 26 °C (79 °F) and drop to about 12 °C (54 °F) at night. Early morning game drives can be chilly, so warm layers are recommended. Kenya’s “long rains” typically occur from mid-March to late May, while the “short rains” fall from late October to early December. Coastal areas remain warm year-round, with humid conditions and occasional showers in rainy months.
