Hell’s Gate’s dramatic gorges (including the iconic Lower Gorge with its narrow sandstone passages and steaming vents) are safest and most accessible during the long dry season (June – September). Footpaths are firm, rock surfaces grippy, and the risk of flash floods is low. The short dry season (December – February) offers similarly excellent conditions, with warm weather ideal for long walks.

Because Hell’s Gate is one of the few Kenyan parks you can explore on foot or by bicycle, the dry seasons (June – September and December – February) provide the best experience. Trails are smooth, wildlife is easy to spot, and temperatures are comfortable throughout the day.

The park’s towering cliffs host some of Kenya’s most iconic raptors, including Verreaux’s eagles, vultures, and augur buzzards. Peak birding season arrives from November to April when migratory species join the resident populations. The short rains bring a vibrant green landscape and heightened bird activity.

Photographers will find the long dry season (June – September) unbeatable for sharp, clean light on Hell’s Gate’s towering red and ochre sandstone walls. The green season (November – April) delivers dramatic storm clouds, geothermal steam rising from the earth, and saturated color.
Hell’s Gate National Park experiences a warm, semi-arid Rift Valley climate with sunny days, cool nights, and spectacular light that shifts throughout the year. Average daytime temperatures typically range from 22 – 30 °C (72 – 86 °F).
Hell’s Gate National Park typically experiences warm days and cool nights, with temperatures ranging from 18 – 30 °C (64 – 86 °F) depending on the season. Short rains occur from October – December, and long rains from March – May. Dry months provide the safest gorge access and best visibility.
