Elephants are found throughout Tsavo West year-round, especially around waterholes, riverbeds, and natural springs like Mzima Springs and the Tsavo River. The long dry season (June – September) offers the clearest viewing as herds gather at reliable water sources. The short dry season (December – February) also delivers excellent sightings with warm, sunny weather.

Tsavo West’s rocky hills and woodland habitat offer strong chances to spot leopards, particularly during the dry seasons when visibility is at its best. Lions are often encountered on the plains, and cheetahs hunt in more open areas near the southern grasslands.

With over 400 recorded species, Tsavo West is superb for birdwatching, especially around wetlands and springs. October to April offers peak diversity thanks to migratory arrivals and active breeding seasons in the park’s greener habitats.

Tsavo West’s volcanic escarpments, lava flows, and oases are photogenic year-round. June to September offers crisp skies and long visibility, while October to April brings dramatic cloudscapes and rich greenery, ideal for atmospheric landscape images.
Tsavo West has a warm, semi-arid climate moderated by elevation and abundant natural springs. Daytime temperatures typically range from 70 – 95 °F (21 – 35 °C).
Tsavo West remains warm to hot throughout the year, averaging 70 – 95 °F (21 – 35 °C). Dry seasons offer peak visibility, while the rainy seasons enhance dramatic landscapes and birdlife activity.
