The area where Ol Pejeta Conservancy Safari Tours are now conducted was a cattle ranch during much of the colonial period owned by, among others, Lord Delemere of “Out of Africa” fame. Beginning in the mid-1960s it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep local wildlife off the land and eventually part of the ranch was set aside for the endangered black rhino.
In time, the conservation area grew to become the current Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Situated on the equator, Ol Pejeta provides sanctuary for endangered rhinos (including the last 2 remaining northern white rhinos) and hosts Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
