From the mist-draped slopes of Volcanoes National Park to the sweeping savannahs of Akagera and the glassy expanse of Lake Kivu, Rwanda offers one of Africa’s most diverse and intimate safari experiences. Hike through ancient rainforest to sit quietly with a family of mountain gorillas, track chimpanzees in the treetops of Nyungwe, or set out across rolling plains in search of lions and elephants. Rwanda is a place where wild encounters feel deeply personal, and the landscapes are as dramatic as the wildlife.
But how much does it cost to go on safari in this Central African gem? Rwanda cost considerations depend on when you visit, the style of your travel, and the kind of wildlife encounters you choose. Whether you’re after the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of gorilla trekking, a classic savannah safari, or a luxury lake retreat, here’s what to know about the cost of a Rwanda safari and how to design an itinerary that suits your budget and style.
The highlight for many visitors, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is an extraordinary and highly regulated experience. A gorilla trekking permit currently costs $1,500 per person per trek, regardless of season. Most travellers stay in lodges close to the park headquarters in Kinigi or Musanze, ranging from comfortable guesthouses to ultra-luxury retreats with volcano views.

Nyungwe Forest National Park offers chimp tracking, canopy walks, and sightings of rare monkeys. Chimpanzee permits cost about $90 per person, with forest treks generally less expensive than gorilla trekking but still requiring a good level of fitness.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s Big 5 destination. Game drives, boat safaris, and guided walks are possible, with lodges ranging from mid-range tented camps to luxury lakeside retreats. Park entry is about $100 per adult per day for international visitors, with guided drives offered by lodges or private operators.

While Rwanda is compact, some travellers opt for charter flights to save time between destinations such as Kigali, Volcanoes, Nyungwe, and Akagera. Private charters and helicopter transfers offer speed and spectacular views, but come at a premium.

Most safaris in Rwanda are conducted by road, often in 4×4 safari vehicles. The country’s excellent road network means you can travel between major parks in just a few hours. Private driver-guides are common, with costs included in most safari packages.

Accommodation in Rwanda ranges from boutique eco-lodges surrounded by tea plantations to chic contemporary suites overlooking volcanic peaks. In Akagera, you’ll find luxury tented camps on the shores of Lake Ihema, while Nyungwe’s high-altitude lodges wrap you in forest mist each morning.

Important note for all Rwanda costs: All prices are per person, per night sharing (double occupancy), in high and low Season. Prices exclude international flights, visas, gorilla and chimpanzee permits, and optional activities. Park fees are subject to change. Peak or High Season generally runs from June to September and December to February.
The best time for gorilla trekking is during the long dry season from June to September and the short dry season from December to February, when trails are firmer and weather is more predictable. These months are also peak travel periods, so lodge rates are at their highest and gorilla permits can sell out months in advance.
For lower prices and fewer visitors, consider the rainy “green season” from March to May or October to November. Trails can be slippery, but the forests are lush, photography conditions are dramatic, and birdwatching is exceptional.
