The port city of Mombasa is located on the southeastern coast of Kenya, adjacent to the Indian Ocean.  It is Kenya’s second largest city after Nairobi, which lies 483 kilometres (300 mi) to the northwest.

Moi International Airport is located within the Mombasa city limits.  It is regularly serviced by regional and international flights from Europe and the Middle East.  There is no public transport available from the airport, so you will either need to arrange an airport transfer with your hotel or use a taxi or rideshare (Uber).  Mombasa is connected to Nairobi via the Mombasa-Nairobi Expressway.

June to August are the best time to visit Mombasa.  The temperatures are quite warm, with sunny, clear skies.  The dry seasons occur from December to April and from July until September.

The most widespread language in Mombasa (and across Kenya) is Swahili.  English is spoken by some, particularly in tourist areas, such as hotels and resorts.  Swahili and English of the official languages of Kenya.

As with any large city, certain areas are safer than others.  In general, the city is safe in the areas frequented by tourists.  Apply standard travel safety protocols by remaining vigilant at all times, securing your valuables and not venturing out alone after dark.  Pickpockets can be a problem in crowded areas.

When visiting Mombasa, pack lightweight, breathable clothing and a jacket in case it gets cool in the evenings.  You will need both comfortable walking shoes and sandals.  Sun protection should include a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.  Also pack a lightweight scarf, a beach bag and your toiletries, including insect repellent and after-sun lotion.  A smartphone, camera and accessories.  Don’t forget your prescription medication, a basic first-aid kit and travel documents.  We suggest modest dress when in town and for visits to cultural sites.

Yes.  The city generally has good coverage for mobile phones.  It is most cost-effective to purchase and use a local prepaid SIM card.  The quality of WiFi varies greatly but is generally satisfactory in hotels and tourism establishments close to the city.

Visitors to Mombasa typically spend between $50-$75 per day.  While US dollars are accepted in some tourist locations, it is best to carry the local currency – the Kenya Shilling (KES).  Most ATMs only dispense KES.  Credit card facilities are available, more so in areas frequented by tourists, with Visa and Mastercard being the most widely accepted.  Remember to be vigilant and secure your cash and credit cards in a safe place at all times.
