The capital city, Nairobi is located in the south-central part of Kenya, at an elevation of 1,795 metres (5,889 ft).  It is named after the Nairobi River.  The name is derived from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which means ‘place of cool waters’.

As the capital city, the nearby Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is conveniently located some 17 kilometres (10.5 mi) from the city centre and is serviced by numerous international airlines, including Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Virgin and British Airways.    Most regional flights to and from Nairobi use Wilson Airport, on the city’s southern outskirts.  There are numerous car rental agencies, as well as taxis and rideshare options, available from the airport.  Bus 34 runs from the airport to the city centre.

Yes, for the most part, Nairobi is safe to visit.  Practice standard travel safety precautions, such as not going out alone after dark, avoiding unseemly areas and securing your valuables out of sight.

Due to its altitude, Nairobi has a cool, subtropical climate.  It is generally warm and mild during the day but can get quite chilly overnight, so be sure to pack a few items of warm clothing along with lightweight, breathable, summer wear.  Bring comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses.  A universal plug adapter, reusable water bottle and small daypack are useful.  Don’t forget necessary medications, travel documents and vaccination certificates.

Nairobi is a vibrant city, blending modern infrastructure and trends with a rich cultural heritage.  The city offers diverse cuisine, thriving markets and pulsating nightlife.  The weather is variable, generally with warm days and cool overnight.  The traffic can be congested at times.  Locals are generally friendly.  Where possible, do not walk around alone, particularly after dark.

On average, visitors spend between $50-$75 per day in Nairobi.  While US dollars are widely accepted, it is a good idea to carry some of the local currency – the Kenya Shilling (KES).  The majority of ATMs dispense KES.  Credit card facilities are widely available, with Visa and Mastercard being the most widespread.  American Express is best for foreign currency withdrawals (when and where available).  Be sure to keep your cash and credit cards in a safe place at all times.

For porters, around $1/bag.  In restaurants and bars – 10% or more of the total bill.  To tip hotel staff, we suggest between $10-$20 per room per day.  While tipping is common practice in Kenya, it is not mandatory.
